Jinn 93x Archives It took roughly three weeks to construct two carriages for the giant falcons, collect and pack Ahma's writings, maps, and supplies. These included his inventions, herbal preparations, and devices he had created while at Dalonagha. Initially, Ahma was hesitant to start going through his collected writings, but once he forced himself to attend to culling through his libraries and writings, he got into the spirit of the things and frequently could be found chuckling over some item that he had collected. Seeing some of the older items that he had retained in his collections often caused him to laugh out loud. One morning, I stepped over to where Ahma had been going through his collection and noticed that he had two piles. He told me that one pile was writings that he had determined to take, and the other would be left. I picked up one of the journals from the pile of discards and flipped through them. It was one of the journals that contained some of Ahma's illustrations and descriptions of the mutated creatures that had been created at the Rand. These journals had intrigued me when I first observed them, and so I asked Ahma if I could take those journals with me. He offered no objection, and found it amusing that I would want them. "What will you do with these, Brax?" he asked. "I don't really know, but unusual things have always interested me, and the fact that these creatures exist may prove useful on our trek," I answered. Ahma told me that I could have whatever I desired, and that I was free to make copies of anything that he intended to take with him when we left Dalonagha for good. Earlier, before we had been taken by the Meedree, I had copied items of interest from his journals, but when time permitted, I went through his collection again, and either kept some of his discarded writings, or made copies from the journals he had decided to take with him. Dezz had kept to herself for the most part while Oona and Ahma were preparing to leave. We all got together for meals and Dezz made sure that she sat next to me. She regularly brushed her leg next to me discreetly, and I felt like a teenager playing footsy back in high school at the cafeteria with Cathy Tolland. One night, I couldn't sleep so I got up and walked into Ahma's library. I was surprised to see Dezz and Oona sitting there when I entered. "You women couldn't sleep either?" I asked. "No, you too?" Dezz asked. "Yeah, don't really know why, how about you two?" I replied. "We felt more trembles—possibly quakes from the mountain—and they woke us," Dezz explained. I turned around just in time to see a Meedree warrior lunging at me! The Meedree struck a grazing blow to my jaw, but fortunately I was able to move just enough that, although I had been struck, the warrior was thrown off balance and tripped and fell to the floor. Dezz and Oona screamed and darted into the corner as I pulled the Meedree tribesman up to his feet. The commotion had brought Ahma, Brok, Grazzat, Ronic, Unk and the other small-heads to the library. One of the small-heads rapidly began speaking Meedree to the apprehended invader. The Meedree warrior initially did not respond in any fashion to the queries offered by the worried small-head. Ahma left briefly, only to quickly return with a small container, easily held in the palm of his left hand. Ahma stood directly in front of the warrior and opened up the container, and then by means of a wooden set of tweezers extracted a many legged, multi-segmented insect and held it within a couple of inches from the warrior's eyes. The effect on the Meedree was immediate and what Ahma had intended. His eyes widened and he began to violently shake before finally stammering out foreign sentences in a staccato fashion. One of the newly-liberated small-heads began translating what the Meedree was saying. "They're coming! Many of them," the small-head revealed. Oona and Dezz's attention were focused upon something going on outside the opening of the mountain face. "What is it?" I asked them. "This warrior is only the beginning. See for yourself," Oona noted, pointing outside. Previous Page Next Page Friends, How about giving a Gift Subscription to Raven's Demise to your friends, relatives, and workmates? It's easy.
